The approximate diameter of the base and the weight of a
.22 LR is approx .223 inches and weighs approx _40 grains (2.59 grams)
.45 HP is approx .45 inches and weighs approx 245 grains (15.88 grams)

When a bullet passes thru muscle like perhaps the leg of an animal and on into the animal’s body, bouncing off some ribs and finally stopping dangerously close to the spine; depending on the type of bullet, a few things can happen.

In the case I am most familiar with; the bullet was removed post mortem in the 8o’s – the top half had mushroomed so even with modern day ballistics, an exact firearm match would be unlikely. However the base remained at just under one-half inch and weighed just over one-half ounce. Which confirmed what had been extrapolated from the x-rays taken after the incident.

My parents did not want it taken and sold as a souvenir – as had some other related items.
The remainder of the bullet was melted down and disposed of.
